A CBS police procedural drama, The Mentalist revolves around Patrick Jane (Simon Baker, The Guardian), an independent consultant turned private investigator, who uses his razor sharp skills of observation to help the police. He is obviously brilliant, but like House or Sherlock Holmes, antisocial with the group. Patrick Jane has the ability to spot minute details, but he does much more than that. He loves to play mind games with people to get answers, reads their emotions and sets elaborate traps to catch them, bringing a sense of “I know more than you and there is nothing you can do about it.” Intimidating…
He is notorious among his colleagues at the California Bureau of Investigation (CBI) mainly due to his lack of protocol, but also due to his past as a celebrity psychic medium, whose paranormal abilities he now admits he feigned. He works with Senior Special Agent Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney, House, Prison Break) and her team: agents Kimball Cho (Tim Kang, Ghost Whisperer, Monk, The Office), Wayne Rigsby (Owain Yeoman, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles) and Grace Van Pelt (Amanda Righetti, The O.C., Entourage). They think Jane is a loose cannon but admire his charm and skill for clearing cases.
Raised by an emotionally abusive father, Patrick Jane became a confidence artist. He posed as a psychic medium and enjoyed near celebrity status until one day, when he treaded on a serial killer’s toes. As mad as a March hare, Red John murdered Patrick’s wife and young daughter. Hoping to one day bring the murderer of his family to justice, he joined a team of CBI agents as a criminal consultant. The leader of the “Serious Crime Unit”, Senior Special Agent Teresa Lisbon is one of the few people that Patrick Jane trusts with details of his past and truly cares about. Although his attitude often gets her into trouble, she is seen from time to time affected by his charm. Before becoming a police officer, Special Agent Kimball Cho was a member of a street gang and even came in for a juvenile record which is sealed. He has a dry sense of humor and is good friends with Special Agent Wayne Rigsby. The son of a former career criminal, his fellow serves as an arson specialist. He lost his heart to Special Agent Grace Van Pelt, the newest member of Teresa Lisbon’ “Serious Crime Unit”.
